Holiday and Short Term Rental Industry to Self-Regulate

stayz logoSignifying an important step towards self-regulation for the holiday and short term rental Industry, Australia’s leading holiday rental portals Stayz.com.au and Occupancy.com (TakeABreak and rentahome.com.au) have developed a set of national Holiday and Short Term Rental Guidelines for agents, owners and guests.

The Holiday and Short Term Rental Guidelines establish a set of industry practices that satisfy the needs of local communities, property owners, tourism operators and guests. The Guidelines will help improve the experience of visitors by improving the overall standards of holiday rentals and encourage more domestic tourism, particularly to regional areas.

Justin Butterworth, Joint CEO at Occupancy.com, says, “holiday rentals deliver significant benefits to regional communities and local economies in terms of visitor expenditure and jobs. These Guidelines help ensure the sustainable growth of this popular form of affordable accommodation which has a 140 year tradition in Australia.”

As a condition of listing on Stayz.com.au and Occupancy.com property owners and agents will need to comply with the Guidelines which cover: property management, letting agreements, bonds and payments, recycling and garbage, parking, and complaints. They also cover visitor obligations regarding noise levels and compliance with council by-laws.

Effective from 9 September 2010 the Guidelines will be mandatory on Stayz and Occupancy websites.

A full copy of the Guidelines can be found: stayz.com.au/holiday-rental-guidelines

New General Manager Appointed at Lenna of Hobart

Lenna logoMs Lauren Hodder has been appointed to the position of General Manager, Lenna of Hobart. Lauren, formally the Food & Beverage manager, becomes the youngest General Manager of the iconic and historic Hobart hotel which has successfully operated for some 38 years. Her appointment is a vote of confidence in the Tasmanian tourism industries next generation of young aspiring and talented leaders according to Managing Director Jan Clark.

The hotel property is currently undertaking the first stage of major room refurbishments in sympathy with the heritage values of the Lenna colonial mansion and providing a contemporary foil, with state of the art in-room technology, to meet the sophisticated demands of the modern traveller. Lauren believes that the customer driven culture and uniqueness of the hotel combined with the modernized rooms will strengthen Lenna’s position as a hotel of first choice in a dynamic and competitive Tasmanian Tourism market.

A ‘Student of the Year’ recipient at Drysdale Institute and the current state winner of the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) award as the industry Rising Star, Lauren has achieved much in her short career and is now poised to contribute in a major way through her stewardship of Lenna and key involvement in the Tasmanian Tourism and Hospitality industry.

New Tourism Product: On Top of the World Tours at Maydena

MaydenaA new way to experience Tasmania’s rugged mountain scenery is being offered to tourists and locals alike at Maydena. Rather than shying away from the cold of winter, the crew at Maydena Adventure Hub are embracing it with their “On Top of the World Tour” offering a unique way to experience Tasmania’s highlands in all its stark beauty - including the snow! But visitors won’t be ‘roughing it’. Indulgence and fun are the words for this intimate tour, which includes hot soup and crusty rolls to start the day, a journey along the Maydena railway line on the Railtrack Rider, a stroll through the cathedral-like surrounds of the Styx Big Tree Reserve, plus a guided forest tour in a four wheel drive bus, which culminates in spectacular views into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from the summit of Abbotts Peak.

All this is topped off by a gourmet lunch prepared by leading chef Waji Spiby and fine wines by the award winning Meadowbank vineyard, enjoyed by a roaring fire at the ‘top of the world’ in the Eagles Eyrie.

Princes Wharf no. 2 "waste of prime location for an academic office block"

TICT_v1_little 2The Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania has today released a media statement saying that handing over another prime waterfront site without public consultation to give academics great water views is a wasted opportunity.

TICT Chief Executive Officer Daniel Hanna said today the industry’s board was of the strong view that handing over Princes Wharf No 2 to the University for the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Science broke every principle Premier David Bartlett had espoused about transparency and openness for waterfront developments.

“Princes Wharf No. 2 is a most valuable piece of real estate in Tasmania – conservatively worth $4 million on the open market.

“Why not establish a process to evaluate all serious proposals?

Mr Hanna said the tourism industry believed Princes Wharf No. 2 had enormous potential.

“There are dozens of great possible uses for the site. Princes Wharf No. 2 could be a multi-purpose site, incorporating tourism and retail – a hotel, offices, water-based tourism ventures – and ensure permanent public access to an important part of under-used Hobart waterfront.

To view the full media release visit the TICT website.

How the Federal Election will Impact Tourism in Tasmania

Aust. Gov. logoSaturday 21st August 2010 will see Australia go to the polls for a Federal Election. The TICT has outlined to both major parties two election priorities for tourism in Tasmania.

1. Commitment to the retention of the existing BSPVES during the life of the next parliament.

2. Commitment to working with the Tasmanian Government to jointly fund the TMAG redevelopment, pending a full business case that demonstrates a strong return on investment.

The TICT has also worked through national bodies such as the National Tourism Alliance (NTA) and the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) to support more general investments in tourism.

Recently both major parties released their tourism policies, and provided increased spending for the sector. Labor’s $46m additional commitment is primarily targeting industry development through the TQUAL program and funding for the National Long-Term Tourism Strategy. The Coalition’s $92m additional commitment is targeting business events, tourism infrastructure, research, and regional tourism.

TICT Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Hanna commented “both of these commitments reflect strong support for tourism by the major parties at the Federal level. To gain funding commitments, albeit modest, in the current fiscal climate is welcome.”

Tasmania Risks Most Valuable Real Estate

Posted on Friday, 20 August 2010 | Permalink

“Waste of prime location for academic office block”

The Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania says handing over another prime waterfront site without public consultation to give academics great water views is a wasted opportunity.

Mr Hanna said giving away Princes Wharf No 2 for a token denied Tasmania opportunities for more productive uses that would create jobs, investment and return value to the State.

“The TICT board strongly believes that Premier Bartlett must provide an open process for evaluation by all Tasmanians, and not just pursue his own personal preference,” Mr Hanna said.

“Last year the Premier stated that all future development of waterfront sites would be the subject of an open and transparent process where the best use for each site could be determined along with the social, economic and environmental implications.

“This is what is occurring for the Parliament Square site and for the Macquarie No 1 shed, so why should Princes No 2 be treated any differently?” Mr Hanna said.

“The industry wants the Premier to live up to his stated principles of openness, transparency and commitment to allow public comment and public consultation.

“At the minimum, the Government should have called for expressions of interest for development of Princes Wharf No 2,” Mr Hanna said.

“The Government needs to test the market and see what ideas are put forward, then evaluate how they stack up against the University proposal in terms of jobs, investment and in providing a return to the State.

“Giving this site to the University without a proper process, to be used for a not-for-profit, institutionalised office block is just plain wrong. We have already provided a vast amount of prime waterfront real estate for institutions like the School of Arts and CSIRO basically to put academic bums on seats when really they could sit in offices anywhere around greater Hobart,” Mr Hanna said.

“The TICT board is concerned that a deal has been done and it is not to be given any scrutiny at all; there is no public input into this use and no consultation,” Mr Hanna said.

World Heritage Listing for 5 Tasmanian Convict Sites

world heritageFederal Minister for Environment Protection and Heritage, Peter Garrett, and Tasmanian Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, David O’Byrne have welcomed the addition of 11 convict sites across Australia to the World Heritage List.

Five of the 11 convict sites in the World Heritage listing are located in Tasmania. They include:

• The Cascades Female Factory, in Hobart

• The Port Arthur Historic Site

• The Coal Mines Historic Site

• Brickendon and Woolmers Estates - located near Longford

• Darlington Probation Station - located on Maria Island

“Forced penal migration had a particular impact on Tasmania because of its sheer scale in relation to the general population. It’s not surprising that nearly half of the listed sites are in this State,” David O’Byrne said.

Mr O’Byrne credited communities around the sites with helping enable the listings, which are expected to generate environmental, social and economic benefits for Tasmania. The 11 sites are also included on the National Heritage List and are protected under national environment law.

Education needs of the Tasmanian Tourism Industry - Survey Results

TICT-UTAS-TOURISM TAS Merged logosIn May the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania, Tourism Tasmania and the University of Tasmania undertook a joint survey to gain a better understanding of the requirements of the Tasmanian tourism industry for University graduates.

This short survey was sent to tourism operators across Tasmania and to key allied tourism service organisations (including Government, Council, marketing and consulting companies) so as to determine the level of recruitment of graduates with a tourism focus over the last five years, and to estimate needs for the next five years.

A summary of the results from the educational needs survey can be viewed here.

The survey results and comments are being compiled to assist the University to continue to improve its delivery of future courses and programs suited to the tourism industry across the State. It will also assist the University in working with the VET sector and other training providers in the State to address the training and educational needs of the tourism industry.

Tiger Airways to Withdraw Services

Tiger AiwaysAs of August 2 budget airline Tiger Airways will withdraw the daily Melbourne to Launceston service and the direct Hobart to Adelaide service that operates 4 times a week.

The Singaporean owned airline announced that the routes were being dropped due to poor returns, and that the need for financial viability was a commercial reality. Tiger Airways will maintain the Melbourne to Hobart service.

Customers who have flights booked for after the withdrawal date will receive a full refund on their Tiger Airways ticket, and Jetstar are offering a $50 travel voucher to any Launceston passenger who had lost their original flight with Tiger Airways.

TICT CEO Daniel Hanna said that the result is disappointing news but there is optimism that other carriers may be able to increase their capacity.

“Airlines make business decisions based on a range of factors and unfortunately in this case Tasmania, and particularly Launceston, will lose out. The TICT is hopeful that the other airlines servicing Tasmania will see an opportunity to expand their schedules to fill the gap.

“Tasmania remains a strong destination with future growth potential but strong access is absolutely vital. This is why it is important that the Government and the industry work together to build demand for the destination and therefore a business case for increased air services.”

Jetstar to grow low fare flights to Launceston by 40 percent

JetstarJetstar will expand its future operations into Launceston by 40 percent, introducing new daily services from Melbourne and Sydney in December to its northern Tasmanian gateway.

Jetstar will invest in future growth for Launceston and Tasmanian tourism by increasing existing 3 times daily Melbourne-Launceston services to operate 4 times daily return (from 10 December). Jetstar will double its Sydney-Launceston return frequencies to twice daily (commencing from 2 December 2010) with the addition of a new conveniently timed early evening return flight.

Jetstar’s new low fare services will inject almost 2500 additional weekly seats for the Launceston market into its year-round schedule in time to support Tasmania’s peak tourism season, whilst greatly enhancing direct flight access from the city for both leisure and business flyers.

Tasmanian Minister for Tourism Michelle O’Byrne MP said: ”This is fantastic news from Jetstar and clear evidence of the confidence that they have in Tasmania. It’s pleasing to see they are prepared to step in and provide more direct flights into Launceston from our key interstate markets of Melbourne and Sydney.”

Support Daniel “Sleep Out” for the Salvo’s

salvation armyTICT Chief Executive Officer Daniel Hanna will again “Sleep Out” for the Salvo’s.

The event will be held this year in Hobart on the 5th of August, when Daniel will sleep out in the winter cold to raise awareness and funds for the Salvation Army.

Unfortunately, the call on their services remains high and is particularly in need at this time of year when the winter cold starts to bite. $63 is enough to give a homeless person a safe bed for the night, breakfast, a warm shower and some help finding more permanent accommodation. 100,000 Australians go homeless every night. The Salvation Army currently provides 2,000 beds for homeless Australians made possible through the Red Shield and Christmas Appeals.

But more help is needed!

Daniel is asking for your help and hoping that you will give generously, on behalf of the tourism industry, for the homeless in Tasmania.

BSPVES Increase Benefits Tourism

Posted on Tuesday, 29 June 2010 | Permalink

The Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania says the increase in the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme will benefit tourism and the Tasmanian economy.

TICT Chief Executive Officer Daniel Hanna said today the CPI increase in the BSPVES provided certainty for the industry and ferry users and helped maintain Tasmania’s competitiveness with other Australian destinations for road travelers.

“The Tasmanian tourism industry argued long and hard in 2007 for an increase in the Bass Strait passenger vehicle rebate and for it to be linked to inflation to avoid it falling behind cost increases as it had over the previous decade. It was strongly welcomed by the Tasmanian tourism industry when the Australian Government delivered on their commitment in 2008,” Mr Hanna said.

“The increase in the rebate for motor vehicles from 1 July – the third increase in a row – continues to make ferry transport a viable alternative for many travelers and Tasmania as an attractive option for motor vehicle tourists.

“The BSPVES is vital for the Tasmanian regional economy and it is an example of a highly effective program that achieves real benefits. The Tasmanian tourism industry congratulates the Australian Government for their ongoing commitment to this vital program for Tasmania.

“There is no doubt that Tasmania’s tourism industry benefited enormously from the introduction of the Spirit of Tasmania ferries and continues to do so. The Tasmanian Government investment in the vessels, combined with the rebate provided by the Australian Government, is a great example of a federal-state partnership.

We know that passengers arriving via sea stay in Tasmania longer, spend more when they are here and travel more widely which ensures they benefit the whole economy,” Mr Hanna said.

Budget Underlines Tourism's Importance to Tasmania's Economy

Posted on Thursday, 17 June 2010 | Permalink

The Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania says today’s State Budget recognised the importance of tourism to the economy.

TICT Chief Executive Daniel Hanna said the Budget delivered on the Government’s key election funding commitments for tourism marketing and events promotion.

Funding for tourism marketing and events promotion has received an additional $7.5 million a year for the next four years.

Total funding for tourism – including funding for Tourism Tasmania – increased from $23.193 million to $30.724 million in 2010-11. Over the four years the additional funding includes $20 million for tourism marketing, $6 million for the Events Attraction Program, $1 million for International and National Arts Events, and $1.4m for the annual MONA FOMA event.

“This is a good outcome for the tourism industry and a reversal of the trend of recent years. It means tourism funding is back on a sustainable path,” Mr Hanna said.

“The budget recognises that Tasmania’s economic health and recovery depend very much on tourism which continues to be one of the State’s major success stories in generating investment and jobs growth. Tourism now generates over $2.2 billion a year in spending and supports over 25,000 jobs. Previous studies have shown that Tasmania’s economy is more reliant on tourism than any other state in the nation, with the highest share of Gross State Product and employment.

The Budget forecast 2.25% economic growth and the creation of 15,000 jobs for 2010-11 and includes the promised cuts to land tax costing the Government $28 million. The Budget is also going to return to surplus sooner than previously anticipated.

“With the funding included in this Budget over the next four years, tourism will be well-placed to continue to play its role as a major generator of jobs and investment. Tasmania will be better placed to compete with other destinations for visitors as the world emerges from the ravages of the Global Financial Crisis,” Mr Hanna said.

Mr Hanna said the TICT also welcomed the allocation of $12.8 million funding for the development of an iconic multi-day walk on the Tasman Peninsula, the Three Capes Track. The Australian Government has also committed $12.5 million to the project, with the private sector funding the remainder of the $33 million development.

KPMG has calculated that the Tasmanian economy could benefit by up to $188 million per annum and 1563 jobs through increased day walk visitors as a result of the development of the Three Capes Track.

Importantly, the report also found that the Tasman Peninsula economy could benefit by up to $43.75 million annually and 323 jobs.

Mr Hanna said the new Track would be a major drawcard and add to Tasmania’s international reputation for world-class wilderness experiences. Tasmania will also be better placed to compete with other world class walking destinations like New Zealand.

“Our parks and wilderness areas are a vital part of the Tasmanian brand so we also welcome the Government’s provision of an extra $4 million a year for four years to the Parks and Wildlife Service for additional staff and bushfire protection,” Mr Hanna said.
