Survey: October 2010 Sentiment
Over 30% of tourism business operators that were sent the sentiment survey responded with a total of 282 responses. This represented a range of business types and all locations throughout Tasmania. The four main findings were:- A majority of tourism businesses throughout the state experienced a weak September quarter with lower revenue than the same period in 2009.
- Advance bookings and revenue expectations of tourism businesses are also weak throughout the state compared to last year and budget forecasts.
- Smaller businesses such as bed and breakfasts have experienced the poorest business results and have the lowest level of advance bookings and expectations for the coming season.
- The weak conditions for tourism businesses are being felt throughout the state; although businesses in the south of the state and Launceston, Tamar Valley and the regional north are slightly below the state average.
In reading the full report, the following should be taken into account:
- This is not a survey of overall visitor numbers to Tasmania, but is a survey of the experience of tourism business operators.
- This survey provides equal importance to the results from each business, regardless of their size; therefore it should not be taken as reflecting overall tourism business revenue.
- The results by business type and location should be used with caution because:
- Some small sample sizes (especially some business types); and
- Some respondents operate in multiple zones and have multiple business types and therefore selected more than one of these options.
