Visitor Information Guide Going Mobile

Friday, August 10, 2012

Tasmania’s 22 Visitor Information Centres play a critical and highly valued role in the Tasmanian tourism industry, providing information and services to visitors in all parts of the State.

It is important Visitor Information Centres are able to enhance their services through the use of new technology and take advantage of the new opportunities for tourism emerging from the digital economy. We know visitors are increasingly turning to their mobile devices and ‘apps’ to source information prior to arriving in Tasmania, and then when they are on the road touring the State.

To assist Tasmania Visitor Information Centres to respond to this growing consumer trend, the Tourism Minister Scott Bacon announced at the Tasmanian Visitor Information Network State Conference held last week in Smithton last week, that the TVIN would receive a grant of $20,000 as part of the “Tourism Businesses in the Digital Age” Program to develop a new application for mobile phones that will give visitors easy access to a range of information about the experiences on offer in Tasmania - driving routes, directions, trails, tours, accommodation, restaurants and special offers.".

The Tourism Businesses in the Digital Age Program is an important initiative of Tourism Industry Council Tasmania designed to develop and test a range of exciting digital solutions and on-line marketing strategies within the tourism industry. The funding for the program has been made available by the Tasmanian Government to assist Tasmanian businesses prepare for the emerging opportunities from the roll-out of the National Broadband Network.
