You will have noticed food and drink is now generating a lot of attention for Tasmanian tourismEpicurious picked Tasmania as 2014’s global ‘foodie destination’; while our fresh and artisanal produce - along with the talented people who work with them – are receiving regular international acclaim.

We are also set to take centre stage in Tourism Australia’s ‘Restaurant Australia’ campaign, with Tasmania selected to host some of the world’s leading food critics and opinion-generators at the ‘Invite the World to Dinner’ at MONA in November.

Ultimately the ‘foodies’ who are set to come to Tasmania in increasing numbers want to experience all we have to offer as a destination, and this is the big opportunity for everyone in the Tasmanian tourism industry – and let’s not forget, every tourist needs to eat, so food and food service is a critical factor in every visitor’s experience of our state.

This year our Conference theme is ‘Tasmania on a Plate’. With some really exciting speakers and pioneers in the field of food tourism, we’ll be looking at how to capitalise on the attention; the links between people, place and produce; how to develop tourism experiences around food and drink, and our competitive strengths as a food tourism destination.

But it’s not all about food – our always popular workshops and breakout sessions cover a diverse range of topics relevant to all tourism businesses, including: how to leverage off major events, social media marketing, welcoming Chinese visitors, and making your business more sustainable through yield management and reducing your environmental footprint.

We’ll look at the big picture for Australian and Tasmanian tourism, how we’re going to achieve 1.5 million to Tasmania each year by 2020; the need for reinvestment to increase the value of your product, and ‘Five Start F*** Ups’ – how to find and fix the little things that let your business down.

We have a fantastic line up of speakers including the internationally acclaimed Alla Wolf-Tasker, a living legend for food, tourism and destination dining; Natalie O’Brien, CEO of Australia’s pre-eminent food and wine event – the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival; the unconventional travel writer, Max Anderson; new CEO of Tourism Australia, John O’Sullivan and many, many more…

The Trade Show at Albert Hall is back with more exhibitors and special deals (and this year there will be cocktails!), and we welcome the exciting new Northern Tasmania on a Plate initiative from Tourism Northern Tasmania. Finishing the program with a bang, our always popular Conference Dinner will be better than ever – this year featuring one of Australia’s most loved and irreverent comediennes – Denise Scott.
